These fun science experiments were done at home by NSF International employees and their kids
ANN ARBOR, MI -- Since bringing children to work for a day is not currently an option due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, an Ann Arbor-based public health inspection organization is doing the opposite.
NSF International, a worldwide organization, hosts an annual event for employees to bring their children to work to participate in activities like making slime, demonstrating rain gardens, learning about composting and swabbing at-home items to let organisms grow in their lab's Petri dishes.

But, due to the "stay-home" order to curb the spread of COVID-19, NSF had to be creative this year. The company shared videos on its YouTube channel of NSF scientists recording at-home experiments with their kids.
"One of the things the team has talked about was every year we get more and more kids," said Mindy Costello, NSF consumer information specialist. "We wanted to continue that because it's such a fun time for our scientists and experts to show kids what they do."
Last year, more than 230 kids participated in 18 activity stations at the NSF headquarters, Costello said. She also manages NSF's Scrub Club, which is a hand-washing website for kids that started before the coronavirus outbreak, but has since been updated to match the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Families are struggling to talk about the pandemic and we thought hand washing is a great thing to share with kids," Costello said. "They can do these demos with kids. They can show them how to wash their hands properly (and) spend time together."
"It's good to have a feel-good story and feel-good moment," Costello said.
Here are a few experiments done this year. You can also watch them on NSF International's YouTube page.
